The natural fiber

A little about sisal

Sisal is a natural fiber extracted from the long, sturdy leaves of the Agave sisalana plant. Grown in several parts of the world, including East Africa, it is valued for its strength, texture, and versatility.

When woven into baskets and bags, natural fibers create pieces with warmth and character. Small differences in shape, weave, and color are part of what makes handwoven work distinctive.

The care guide

How to care for your woven bag

Just a few gentle habits can help your bag maintain its beauty and shape.

01. Keep it dry

Avoid prolonged rain or moisture. If the woven material becomes damp, let it air-dry completely in a well-ventilated space, away from direct heat.

02. Clean gently

Brush away loose dust with a soft, dry brush. For small marks, test a barely damp cloth with a little mild soap in an inconspicuous spot. Never soak the bag.

03. Store thoughtfully

Keep your bag in a cool, dry place. Loosely fill it with clean, unprinted paper to help preserve its shape between uses.

04. Protect the details

Avoid overloading or pulling on handles and embellishments. Leather and other trims may need their own care.

Made Afar offers pieces made from different fibers and materials. These tips are general guidance for natural-fiber woven bags; always consider the needs of any leather, dyed, or decorative details.
